Set Comments
Perhaps the best reason as to why 1966 Superman is one of the most widely collected card sets of the 1960's is because of the sheer number of generations that can claim to have been brought up with the Superman character.
Since the 1940's, Superman fans have flocked to the "Man of Steel" be it in comic books, serials, TV shows, films or in countless other mediums. And card sets are no exception. 1941 Superman cards produced by Gum, Inc. continues to be one of the most sought after sets of the period and the 1966 Superman set sells at even a stronger clip.
Featured in the 1966 set are all the major characters (with the possible exception of Robert Shayne as Inspector Henderson) including both Noel Neil and Phyllis Coates.
1966 Superman cards employ black and white photos from the TV show (as well as off-screen candids) on the card fronts while card backs are found in 3 different styles. Style "1" is the seldom seen "white colored back" variation which features black text and a photo of Superman. Style "2" is the "salmon colored" back and includes the copyright blurb under the text box. Style "3" is also a "salmon colored" back, but carries the advertisement "Watch Superman on TV" underneath the text box with the copyright blurb moved to the far right edge of the card. Both "salmon back" variations also display a photo of Superman and can be found in equal quantities.
