Set Comments

The first of the great wave of monster cards. 1959 You'll Die Laughing (also known as "Funny Monsters") features generic monsters as well as altered classic horror & sci-fi movie monsters with illustrations by celebrated artist Jack Davis.

You'll Die Laughing (which takes it's name from the banner on the card's back) also set a tone for the many monster card sets to follow by parodying it's monsters.

This would prove to be a highly successful formula as parodies never seem to fail with the kiddies, and that by parodying the subject matter, the more gruesome horror elements could be avoided.

Though card backs state "Bubbles, Inc." as the set's producer, this set was produced by Topps. During this period, when Topps felt uneasy about putting their own name on a particular card set, they'd credit "Bubbles, Inc." on the product to distance the Topps brand name from any anticipated controversy.

A 1973 You'll Die Laughing set, also released by Topps, carried their standard "T.C.G." logo on the back.

The 1973 You'll Die Laughing set however employed black & white photography instead of color illustrations.
