Ink Roller Box (Inker Guard) -
Here you see last and most common design of the self winding ticker.
The arrow points to a chrome chamber which houses two ink rollers, one above the other. The top of the box is hinged, so rollers can be removed and dropped back into place.
This design seems to have been stolen from the high speed Black Box ticker of the 1930's. All Self-Winding tickers were originally made with one roller which rested atop the letter wheel much like the Universal Ticker.
In 1927, Western Union designed a special add-on inkwell to keep the roller moist with ink. Apparently it was unpopular, since I have seen the design drawings, but have never actually seen it attached to any tickers.
I assume that all Self-Winders were changed over to the roller box style, without any change in their model designation.
Below are some photos of old single-roller tickers.
