Antique Stock Tickers Stock Ticker Census
The Dow Jones / Wall Street Journal tickers printed on 5" wide paper, and were hence referred to as the "Broad Tape" tickers.
With the invention of electricity in the 19th century, Dow Jones went from distributing a hand-written bulletin delivered by messengers, who raced around Wall Street, to instead distributing its content to financial professionals using an electronic ticker machine.
An ad from The Wall Street Journal on February 26, 1897 reads:
"Quick as a Flash! We give quotations, telegrams, cables and all kinds of news affecting the markets / Page printers are the latest electric device / News carried by electricity printed by electricity / Arranged on a page easily read and filed / No banker or broker can well afford to be without our Financial News Service. / Dow Jones & Co. / 44 Broad St."
