"Lost Wackys" is a generic term used to describe unpublished
Wacky Packages.
Over the past 40 years, Topps Chewing Gum has published hundreds of Wacky
Packages titles in over 25 different series. Many titles were discontinued after companies
sent Cease and Desist (C&D) letters demanding that Topps stop producing parodies of
their products. Some of the more famous C&D'ed titles are Ratz Crackers, Cracked
Animals, Bum Chex, and Choke Wagon.
Sometimes the discontinued titles were replaced with new titles, like Mess
Clairoil and Windhex in the 4th series. Other times, a title was simply dropped and the
series continued. Such is the case with Pupsi in the 10th series and Good and Empty in the
Wacky Ads. However, these are NOT Lost Wackys. In fact, thousands of these C&D'ed
titles were produced before they were "pulled" from their respective series, and
most likely hundreds still exist today.
Lost Wackys are titles that were never published at all, or were released
in special "test" sets in very limited markets. Back in the glory days of Wacky
Packages, Topps was feverishly producing artwork for new series and whenever a C&D
order came in, they would not only drop the titles mentioned in the letter, but also any
future titles related to that company. Often this meant that completed artwork was pulled
from a series before production even began.
Ever wonder why the 5th series checklist has a blank spot in the middle?
Or why the 12th series only has 27 titles, when most others had 30?
Three titles -- Midget Rice,
Fool Aid,
and Ice Krunkles -- were dropped from the 12th Series,
although Ice Krunkles went on to be published in the 1979-1980 reprint series.
